"As a Personal Trainer, it hit me hard when I was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative condition called Parkinson's Disease in my late 40's.
With no medication to cure or even slow the condition down, I quickly realised that exercise was one of the best things I could do to slow disease progression and continue to live well with my condition. The lack of specialist exercise provision and advice across the UK spurred me on to head down to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neuroscience in London, where I qualified as a PD Warrior Instructor. This laid the foundations for the birth of Neuroactive Fitness. I later went on to open our purpose-built centre in 2019.
I am now highly qualified with a Master’s Degree, Advanced Diploma in Coaching, Modular MSc Qualifications in Exercise for Neurological Conditions and Stroke Rehabilitation, plus extensive experience delivering one-to-one exercise and training solutions for older adults and clients with Parkinson's Disease, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Huntingdon's Disease, Kennedy's Disease and a wide range of other clinical conditions.
5 years on, I am happy to say that visitors to the centre are often surprised to learn of my own diagnosis. I personally attribute this to the major role that exercise continues to play in my life with Parkinson's.
Exercise is, in my opinion, the best medicine out there.
